Her practice spans conceptual portraiture, mixed media, and documentary photography. Her work captures everyday scenes from life in C&#244;te d&#8217;Ivoire and across Africa. Much of her work responds to and reflects the diverse cultures surrounding her. Choumali layers her photographs with image cutouts, fabric swatches, and intricate stitchwork. She transforms her original frames into sites of fantasy that burst with color, texture, and imagination. In her recent works, Choumali embroiders directly onto her photographs, completing the creation of the photographic image with a slow and meditative gesture. </p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!7kgh!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf1b84dd-5f81-4160-8a18-329dc4e64013_1200x900.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!7kgh!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf1b84dd-5f81-4160-8a18-329dc4e64013_1200x900.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!7kgh!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf1b84dd-5f81-4160-8a18-329dc4e64013_1200x900.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!7kgh!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf1b84dd-5f81-4160-8a18-329dc4e64013_1200x900.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!7kgh!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf1b84dd-5f81-4160-8a18-329dc4e64013_1200x900.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!7kgh!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf1b84dd-5f81-4160-8a18-329dc4e64013_1200x900.png" width="502" height="376.5" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/df1b84dd-5f81-4160-8a18-329dc4e64013_1200x900.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:900,&quot;width&quot;:1200,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:502,&quot;bytes&quot;:null,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:null,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:false,&quot;topImage&quot;:true,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!7kgh!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf1b84dd-5f81-4160-8a18-329dc4e64013_1200x900.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!7kgh!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf1b84dd-5f81-4160-8a18-329dc4e64013_1200x900.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!7kgh!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf1b84dd-5f81-4160-8a18-329dc4e64013_1200x900.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!7kgh!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf1b84dd-5f81-4160-8a18-329dc4e64013_1200x900.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" fetchpriority="high"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a><figcaption class="image-caption">Joana Choumali. As usual, the fair brings together a focused group of galleries from across Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The fair, which takes place at the Starrett-Lehigh Building in Chelsea, offers a snapshot of contemporary practices from Africa and its diasporas, and a space for exchange between artists, collectors, and ideas.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">This year&#8217;s curated focus, 1-54 Presents: Brazil Beyond Brazil, led by Igor Sim&#245;es, explores Afro-Brazilian practices within a broader diasporic framework, offering a more layered perspective on contemporary production. A series of special projects expands the fair beyond the booth format, with presentations such as Vilanismo: Collective Practices of Refusal across the Black Atlantic, Ekene Ijeoma&#8217;s Black The grand Met Gala, held on May 4, 2026, was influenced by this theme. The exhibition will open on May 10, 2026, inaugurating a nearly 12,000-square-foot gallery suite adjacent to the Great Hall, known as the Cond&#233; M. Nast Galleries. The exhibition will match about 200 artworks with approximately 200 garments and accessories. The exhibition will survey representations of the dressed body across primarily Western art from prehistory to the present.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">In keeping with the recent trend, this article spotlights African artists integrating fashion into their artworks. Featuring paintings of colourful headpieces and sculptural installations of shoes and distinctive batiks on figures, these artists are interpreting the dynamic relationship between fashion and contemporary art.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Anthony Akinbola</strong></p><p style="text-align: justify;">Nigerian-American artist <a href="https://www.instagram.com/heyitsbunmi/">Anthony Akinbola</a> is known for his signature wall-mounted paintings, single and multi-panel works that utilize the ubiquitous du-rag as their primary material. He explores the du-rag as both a material for art-making and as commentary on larger issues of identity, respectability, and commodification of African American culture. His layered, richly colored compositions celebrate and signify the distinct cultures that shape his identity. Some of these large-scale pieces have been exhibited in solo presentations at the Museum of Arts and Design and the Queens Museum.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UiIV!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ff5748250-c0df-4245-bb04-d45704469d67_1017x1320.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UiIV!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ff5748250-c0df-4245-bb04-d45704469d67_1017x1320.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UiIV!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ff5748250-c0df-4245-bb04-d45704469d67_1017x1320.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UiIV!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ff5748250-c0df-4245-bb04-d45704469d67_1017x1320.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UiIV!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ff5748250-c0df-4245-bb04-d45704469d67_1017x1320.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UiIV!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ff5748250-c0df-4245-bb04-d45704469d67_1017x1320.png" width="508" height="659.3510324483776" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/f5748250-c0df-4245-bb04-d45704469d67_1017x1320.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:1320,&quot;width&quot;:1017,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:508,&quot;bytes&quot;:null,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:null,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:false,&quot;topImage&quot;:true,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UiIV!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ff5748250-c0df-4245-bb04-d45704469d67_1017x1320.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UiIV!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ff5748250-c0df-4245-bb04-d45704469d67_1017x1320.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UiIV!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ff5748250-c0df-4245-bb04-d45704469d67_1017x1320.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UiIV!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ff5748250-c0df-4245-bb04-d45704469d67_1017x1320.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" fetchpriority="high"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a><figcaption class="image-caption">Anthony Akinbola, White Bronco, 2022, durags, acrylic on wood panel, 279.4 x 182.9 cm. There are art collectors with massive collections that have made an impact on the African art market. Over the years, these four art collectors have established themselves as leading acquisitors of African art:</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Jean Pigozzi</strong></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Pigozzi">Jean Pigozzi</a> started collecting contemporary African art in 1989. Since then, his private collection has become one of the largest in the world and is known as the Contemporary African Art Collection (CAAC &#8211; the Pigozzi Collection). Up to 2008, the collection was curated by independent curator and art dealer Andr&#233; Magnin. It is an ever increasing collection. There are thousands of artworks featuring paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, installations, and videos from contemporary artists living in sub-Saharan African countries. Artworks from Pigozzi&#8217;s private collection has been exhibited across the world. In 2019, Pigozzi donated 45 contemporary African artworks to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Works from Pigozzi&#8217;s collections have been exhibited at institutions including The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (2005); National Museum of African Art, Washington, D.C. (2005&#8211;06); The Guggenheim Bilbao, Spain (2006&#8211;07); Garage Center for Contemporary Culture, Moscow (2011); CNAC&#8211;Le Magasin, Grenoble, France (2011); and Foundation Cartier, Paris (2015&#8211;16), among others.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!C-CH!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F23451a59-4cb3-4566-b659-e8f0816ffdac_1382x1026.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!C-CH!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F23451a59-4cb3-4566-b659-e8f0816ffdac_1382x1026.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!C-CH!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F23451a59-4cb3-4566-b659-e8f0816ffdac_1382x1026.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!C-CH!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F23451a59-4cb3-4566-b659-e8f0816ffdac_1382x1026.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!C-CH!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F23451a59-4cb3-4566-b659-e8f0816ffdac_1382x1026.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!C-CH!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F23451a59-4cb3-4566-b659-e8f0816ffdac_1382x1026.png" width="502" height="372.6859623733719" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/23451a59-4cb3-4566-b659-e8f0816ffdac_1382x1026.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:1026,&quot;width&quot;:1382,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:502,&quot;bytes&quot;:null,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:null,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:false,&quot;topImage&quot;:true,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!C-CH!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F23451a59-4cb3-4566-b659-e8f0816ffdac_1382x1026.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!C-CH!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F23451a59-4cb3-4566-b659-e8f0816ffdac_1382x1026.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!C-CH!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F23451a59-4cb3-4566-b659-e8f0816ffdac_1382x1026.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!C-CH!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F23451a59-4cb3-4566-b659-e8f0816ffdac_1382x1026.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" fetchpriority="high"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a><figcaption class="image-caption">Installation view of the exhibition &#8220;Ideas of Africa: Portraiture and Political Imagination&#8221; The 13th edition of the fair, which ran for five days at the Convention and Exhibition Centre, featured 240 galleries from 41 countries and territories, and reported steady sales. David Zwirner reported sales with a 2002 painting by South African artist Marlene Dumas, which sold for $3.5 million. Taka Ishii Gallery sold Jade Fadojutimi&#8217;s That day she grieved for the life she never had (2026) for approximately &#163;350,000 ($465,000).</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The works of these three artists caught our attention:</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Jade Fadojutimi</strong></p><p style="text-align: justify;">Nigerian painter <a href="https://jadefadojutimi.com/about/">Jad&#233; Fadojutimi</a>&#8217;s work was presented in a group presentation with Taka Ishii Gallery. Her artistic practice revolves around questions about her own identity and her surroundings. By paying attention to the things that interest her, such as Japanese anime, soundtracks, video games, fashion, and the memories and experiences they evoke, she attempts to find clues to construct a sense of oneself. Interrogating herself incessantly about the fluid nature of identity and how her thoughts, emotions and experiences form her, she reflects on herself and releases her own self through the act of painting. Vivid and brilliant colors in a broad range of concentration and transparency fill up the canvas with brushstrokes in various scales, dots, marks, shapes, and textures. An emotional landscape, drifting between figurative and abstract, emerges with full of energy on the canvas.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u9Cs!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fce55bbd1-8fe9-400e-8e7c-f39ed7f4327b_800x1000.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u9Cs!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fce55bbd1-8fe9-400e-8e7c-f39ed7f4327b_800x1000.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u9Cs!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fce55bbd1-8fe9-400e-8e7c-f39ed7f4327b_800x1000.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u9Cs!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fce55bbd1-8fe9-400e-8e7c-f39ed7f4327b_800x1000.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u9Cs!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fce55bbd1-8fe9-400e-8e7c-f39ed7f4327b_800x1000.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u9Cs!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fce55bbd1-8fe9-400e-8e7c-f39ed7f4327b_800x1000.png" width="524" height="655" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/ce55bbd1-8fe9-400e-8e7c-f39ed7f4327b_800x1000.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:1000,&quot;width&quot;:800,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:524,&quot;bytes&quot;:null,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:null,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:false,&quot;topImage&quot;:true,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u9Cs!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fce55bbd1-8fe9-400e-8e7c-f39ed7f4327b_800x1000.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u9Cs!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fce55bbd1-8fe9-400e-8e7c-f39ed7f4327b_800x1000.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u9Cs!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fce55bbd1-8fe9-400e-8e7c-f39ed7f4327b_800x1000.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u9Cs!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fce55bbd1-8fe9-400e-8e7c-f39ed7f4327b_800x1000.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" fetchpriority="high"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a><figcaption class="image-caption">Jad&#233; Fadojutimi, A Bellyful, 2019, oil and acrylic on canvas, 180 x 160 cm. Working with painting and sculpture and committed to his large-scale, site-specific installations, Nitegeka produces works that address issues of identity sparked by forced migration and cultural and political borders. His installations present obstacles that promote participation in the metaphoric experience: they physically bisect three-dimensional space and use the viewer as a further disruptive variable, resulting in a tableau vivant of sorts. Nitegeka&#8217;s acute, investigatory aesthetic sense places him within the rich art historical cadre of minimalism and abstraction, while the larger concepts he tackles resonate in the atmosphere of today&#8217;s global politics.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!l1I5!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F000ecca2-62d4-4421-8988-d33b060085b8_1534x1536.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!l1I5!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F000ecca2-62d4-4421-8988-d33b060085b8_1534x1536.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!l1I5!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F000ecca2-62d4-4421-8988-d33b060085b8_1534x1536.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!l1I5!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F000ecca2-62d4-4421-8988-d33b060085b8_1534x1536.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!l1I5!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F000ecca2-62d4-4421-8988-d33b060085b8_1534x1536.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!l1I5!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F000ecca2-62d4-4421-8988-d33b060085b8_1534x1536.png" width="520" height="520.7142857142857" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/000ecca2-62d4-4421-8988-d33b060085b8_1534x1536.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:1458,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:520,&quot;bytes&quot;:null,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:null,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!l1I5!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F000ecca2-62d4-4421-8988-d33b060085b8_1534x1536.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!l1I5!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F000ecca2-62d4-4421-8988-d33b060085b8_1534x1536.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!l1I5!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F000ecca2-62d4-4421-8988-d33b060085b8_1534x1536.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!l1I5!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F000ecca2-62d4-4421-8988-d33b060085b8_1534x1536.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a><figcaption class="image-caption">Serge Alain Nitegeka, Displaced Peoples in Situ: Studio Study XXVI, 2024, Acrylic on canvas, 133.5 x 133.5 cm. Their work actively engages with artists to co-create spaces of dialogue and empowerment, challenging conventional narratives while opening new avenues for cultural and artistic expression.
